(Run time: 1:27)
Heroine is based on the true story of Danna Davis and her 10 years in the US Army. A survivor of military sexual trauma, hers is a human story exploring healing, forgiveness, and what speaking your truth really means - with grit, lyricism, and necessary black humor.

NOTE: This story contains triggers, strong language, depictions of sexual violence, and graphic content…

… But not without the humor that makes Danna, who refuses to be a figure of tragedy, a fully rounded person. Its intentions are to bring listeners into the heart of Danna's full experience frankly and responsibly, to give her account the honesty and dignity it deserves, and to tell her story in all its colors. Woven deep into the fabric of Heroine is the rubric that "It is not the event that has the power to define your life, but the story you choose to tell about it."

This audiobook is more of a fully realized radio drama, with fully immersive sound design from sound designer and foley artist Heather Andrews and narration from Audie award-winning narrator Mary Jane Wells.

More details are at heroinetheplay.com, including reviews and press.

Mary Jane Wells trained as an actor at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire, doing theatre in the UK and Europe for 12 years prior to her long-term love affair with the US. She is an award-winning actor and writer who has performed at The Mark Taper Forum with an adaptation of French classic, The Red Balloon, returning later with a solo show, Martha, which toured to the Annenberg Centre, the Kennedy Center, the New Victory on Broadway, and at an international showcase in Philadelphia. She has toured extensively with the Smithsonian and Honolulu Theatre.

Her next new solo show, The Good Girl, is a recent recipient of sponsorship. She partners with Author’s Republic, Capital Theatres and The Kennedy Center from the very beginning — for what she hopes will be an irreverently hilarious new show for those who care for and live with Dementia.

It is her wildest dream to serve with storytelling and create appropriate social impact where possible. maryjanewells.org

Heroine began as Wells' award-winning solo performance, winning a Scottish Theatre Arts Trust Award and a Made in Scotland Award on its world premiere at Assembly Rooms, at The Edinburgh Festival 2018.

Heroine's USA debut was at The Kennedy Center, Washington, DC, in February 2020.

Heroine provides a riveting, sorrowful, and deeply resonant account of one woman’s struggles to cope with the lingering pain from her military service. The play brilliantly dramatizes the immediate shock, subsequent confusion, and lasting hardship associated with military sexual assault, post-traumatic stress, and loss. As Chair of the House Armed Services Military Personnel subcommittee, I wish more Members of Congress and Defense Department officials would watch and learn from this show.” – Congresswoman Jackie Speier

“A breathtaking and powerful account of one soldier's experience... Heroine reflects across the Atlantic some of the experiences of women who have been sexually assaulted in the UK Armed Forces too, and reveals the appalling and impossible situation that they find themselves in.” – Emma Norton, Director of The Centre for Military Justice, London UK
